Titan Facility Services Increases Services to U.S. Military Medical Facilities During COVID-19

Starting out with 50 employees, Titan entered into the Small Business Administration’s 8(a) Business Development Program in 2016 and today employs 322 people across the U.S. Titan manages over 20 different sites and as one of only 6 small businesses in the HAMS program, has been called upon by the military to increase services dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic. The National Center talked with Titan Facility Services Founder/Owner Dave Beaver — a member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska — about Titan’s role in responding to COVID-19 and about the company in general.


1. Tell us a bit about yourself and your business?


I am a member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska and also share DNA with the San Carlos Apache Tribe and the Maricopa from the Gila River Indian Community. I received an MBA from Wayne State College and have been federal marketplace for the past 22 years serving in various administrative capacities. I started Titan Facility Services, LLC in 2011 and am still the sole owner; in 2012 Titan was one of 6 small businesses nationwide to be selected as part of the United States Air Force ‘s Hospital Aseptic Management Services (HAMS) program. At that time Titan was awarded 5 hospitals within the Air Force infrastructure and had approximately 50 employees. Titan’s birth into the federal marketplace was very strategic and in 2016 Titan was successful in getting into the SBA’s 8(a) Business Development program. Today, Titan has approximately 322 employees scattered across the U.S. from San Diego to New Jersey and down to Florida. Titan has over 20 different sites being managed and is still growing. The Air Force now utilizes Titan for Hospital Housekeeping at 18 different military sites which is a large increase from our modest start of 5 back in 2012. Titan is also performing work for the Navy at one of the largest military hospitals in the world in San Diego, CA.


2. You’ve been doing a lot of work directly related to COVID-19 response. Can you tell us about how work and your experience?

Titan had to provide more services to the military during the pandemic and we’ll continue to do so until further notice. We had to also turn down some work which was a tough decision, but we realized that our core competencies lie within the confines of medical facilities and we are experts at Aseptic Cleaning. We were being asked to enter other areas of military installations and we did not want to take a chance with placing people in unfamiliar environments. We have also started our migration into facility support services during this time and we are looking forward to developing business relationships with our strategic partners.


3. How difficult was it to make such a significant change in your business plan in such a tough time? What were your biggest surprises?

The change was brought on overnight and this was our biggest surprise. Also adding the difficulty in the beginning in our ability to obtain proper PPE and supplies we needed for the increased demand.


4. How long do you anticipate your primary focus will be related to COVID-19?

This new change or demand for the service we provide is not going away anytime soon. We have a marketplace that expands across all industries and the demand for our services is higher now than ever. Our challenge will be scaling our services to ensure that we are providing the best possible solutions for our customers.


5. COVID-19 has been devastating to many Native American communities. Why is it important for all of us to work together to combat and recover from COVID-19?

Our multi-generational household compositions combined with severe social ills and inadequate infrastructure in our communities makes us more vulnerable than other members of society and in danger of suffering the most. We have to help each other combat this pandemic in any way possible. We need to be creative and find ways to help each other through these tumultuous times. We are resilient people and have been exposed to situations like this in our history so I am positive we will find ways to help one another survive.

6. Shifting to a pre-COVID-19 time. You attended RES in Las Vegas earlier this year. How was that experience, and how has the National Center helped you in the development of your business?

As a former National Center Executive, I benefited most through my participation in the Match Making/Procurement event. I was able to meet with buyers in one location during the same trip and this saved me time and money. I also attended some sessions that influenced some of my strategic plans and exit strategy. The conference was an overall success for my company.
